Women Run Anti-War Ads in Iraq
    t r u t h o u t | Press Release

    Wednesday 17 May 2006

Venice, California - May 15 - CODEPINK: Women for Peace took out full-page ads in 8 Iraqi newspapers today calling on Americans and Iraqi to come together to end the occupation of Iraq. The newspapers are As-sabah Al-Jadid, At-Taakhi, Al-Manar, Al-Haqaeq, Al-Iraq Al-Yaom, As-Syadah, Al-Adalah and Ash-Shahed. They are printed on line at:

Two major newspapers, Azzaman and the U.S.-supported As-Sabah, refused to run the ad.

The ad calls on Americans and Iraqis to work together to stop the bloodshed and bring the US troops home. "We have seen in poll after poll that the majority of Americans and Iraqis want the US troops to return home. Even the majority of US troops (72%) think they should return by the end of this year. It is time for the politicians in both countries to listen to us, the people," the ad says. The ad is linked to a website, in Arabic, where Iraqis can sign a petition and communicate directly with Americans, either by internet or through the mail. To view the website, go to www.esteklal.org.

"We are thrilled by the feedback we are getting," says Medea Benjamin, cofounder of CODEPINK, a women's peace group that sponsored the ads. "The newspapers are reporting that they are swamped with calls from readers saying that this ad gives them hope and makes them realize there are Americans who support their desires to be free from foreign occupation. We must find ways to work together to end the bloodshed."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706P.shtml

The ads are paid for by hundreds of CODEPINK supporters from around the country, including Annie Nelson, wife of renowned singer/songwriter Willie Nelson. "I have been heartbroken by all the death and destruction from this war in Iraq, and I am delighted to have a way to extend my hand in friendship to Iraqi mothers and their families," says Mrs. Nelson.

The ads follow a weekend 24-hour peace vigil at the White House organized by CODEPINK to commemorate Mothers Day, May 14. The vigil included peace mom Cindy Sheehan, actress Susan Sarandon, comedian Dick Gregory, doctor/clown Patch Adams, and women from Iraq and Iran. It featured a concert, strategy workshops on grassroots organizing and national campaigns, an interfaith gathering, and writing and reading letters to Laura Bush urging her to pressure her husband to end the war. The Granny Trek for Peace

REPORT #4 FROM GRANDMA JOAN

By Joan Wile, Founder/Director, Grandmothers Against the War, and proud Granny Jailbird

We old dames are at it again. The Granny Peace Brigade, the coalition of grandmothers who got arrested and jailed when trying to enlist at the Times Square Recruiting Center last October 17, is beginning to make plans to walk from New York City to Washington DC early this summer beginning around June 24. Now that we have been acquitted of the crime of disorderly conduct after a six-day trial, we are ready and able to continue our urgent struggle to stop this horror in Iraq.

The plan is to arrive in the capitol city on July 4th, where we want to create fireworks to out-dazzle the traditional ones. Thus far, we have earmarked stops in Newark NJ; Princeton (where we are to be honored with the PATRIOTS FOR PEACE AWARD); Trenton; Philadelphia; Wilmington; Baltimore; Chevy Chase, MD and then on to DC. We will begin at the scene of our crime (that wasn't) at the Recruiting Station in Times Square, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, then the Verrazano Bridge to Staten Island where we hope to give Congressman Guy Fossella a hard time about his continued gung-ho support of the Iraq occupation.

Although we are still in the embryo stage of planning, we have decided that our main focus will be Congressmen and women. We'll endeavor to see those en route who we feel need a little grandmotherly scolding for being so willing to send our kids and grandkids to die and be grievously wounded in an unwarranted, unjustified and illegal war.

We also hope to have a growing trail of supporters to walk with us and good people to rally with us and give us accommodations at our destinations. Our beloved attorney, Norman Siegel, the great civil liberties lawyer, will walk with us throughout the trip, and we will produce some other surprise notables to join us, as well.

If you're looking for a Norman Rockwell group of apple-cheeked, apron-clad, cookie-baking grannies sitting around in their rockers, forget it. Yes, we rock, but not the way you're thinking! We are New York City career women, for the most part, an interesting and eclectic bunch if I do say so myself.

We range in age from almost 60 to 91. Our eldest, Marie Runyon, is as feisty as they come, having rankled the New York State Assembly when she served a term there. But, she's also famous for having held off Columbia University for about 40 years from tearing down the Columbia-owned building she lives in to make way for faculty housing. She outlasted and outsmarted them, even though they let the building crumble apart around her, and all other tenants had fled, until they finally gave up three years ago and renovated the whole place, giving Marie some extra space in the bargain at no increase in rent. The final symbol of Marie's victory is the fact the building has a plaque on its newly refurbished exterior inscribed with the words, MARIE RUNYON COURT. Marie, though nearly blind and deaf, has no intention of sitting out the walk or anything else the Granny Peace Brigade undertakes. "That Texas village idiot has got to start listening to his elders," says Marie in explaining her unstoppable resolve.

Another one of our accomplished and exceptional Brigade members is well-known actress and playwright Vinie Burrows, with a distinguished career On and Off Broadway beginning with her appearance as a child on stage with Helen Hayes. Vinie, described by Clive Barnes as "one of the reigning divas of the Black theatre," though a great-grandmother is still a busy working actress. She just closed in a Manhattan production of "HECUBA" and is currently in Minneapolis rehearsing an avant garde play entitled "PHOENIX FABRIK." Vinie is known famously for the many one-woman shows she wrote for herself produced on Broadway. In addition, Vinie is a United Nations Permanent Representative for the Women's International Democratic Federation.

Others among us are a pediatrician, a psychotherapist, a singer-lyricist-composer-musician (me), an architect, an artist, a nurse, social workers, a professor and other educators.

We are many things, we grannies, but none of us is rich. We hope to get funding from Progressive groups to help defray the expenses of the trip. We also are looking for volunteers to provide transportation for the highway stretches when some of the older ladies will need to take a break from the hike. A bus would be nice, and maybe a couple of vans. We also welcome offers of housing in the aforementioned cities and, above all, want people to come out to see us when we arrive. [To get in touch with the Granny Peace Brigade, drop the Must Read a line.]

We intend to show that Granny Power is a force to be reckoned with. We intend to demonstrate that the people are rising up to defeat the catastrophic policies of the Bush administration. We intend to prove that older people have a vital role to play in life, and that they must. We intend to bring our young people home from Iraq in one piece. We intend to take back our country.

To quote partly from my song, "I'VE GOT TO TAKE BACK MY COUNTRY":

THE KIDS ARE DYING FAR AWAY IN FOREIGN LANDS I MUST KEEP ON TRYING, THEIR LIVES ARE IN MY HANDS

IN THE TIME THAT'S LEFT TO ME I'LL CONTINUE TO STRIVE TO TAKE BACK MY COUNTRY AS LONG AS I'M ALIVE

LEETSO DEVOURING INDIAN COUNTRY
By lisacash, 23:07

Study may help slay 'Yellow Monster'

Research pioneers understanding of uranium toxicity

Flagstaff, ARIZ. (Feb. 23, 2006)—Low-grade uranium ore is nicknamed "yellowcake" for its color and powdered consistency. The Navajos have another name: Leetso, or "yellow monster."

The yellow monster surfaced on the Navajo Nation with uranium mining that started in the 1940s and continued for the next several decades. In its aftermath came illnesses such as lung cancer among mine workers and worries about environmental contamination among people who live on that land.

The Navajos believe you must gain knowledge of a monster to slay it and restore nature's balance.

Northern Arizona University biochemist Diane Stearns and her Navajo students are not only gaining knowledge, they are adding to that knowledge with new discoveries about uranium.

The fact that uranium, as a radioactive metal, can damage DNA is well documented. But what Stearns and her collaborators recently have found is that uranium can also damage DNA as a heavy metal, independent of its radioactive properties.

A cell with damaged DNA takes on the appearance of a comet with a "tail" of fragmented DNA.

Stearns and her team are the first to show that when cells are exposed to uranium, the uranium binds to DNA and the cells acquire mutations. When uranium attaches to DNA, the genetic code in the cells of living organisms, it can change that code. As a result, the DNA can make the wrong protein or wrong amounts of protein, which affects how the cells grow. Some of these cells can grow to become cancer.

"Essentially, if you get a heavy metal stuck on DNA, you can get a mutation," Stearns explained. Other heavy metals are known to bind to DNA, but Stearns and her colleagues are the first to identify this trait with uranium. Their results were published recently in the journals Mutagenesis and Molecular Carcinogenesis.

Their findings have far-reaching implications for people living near abandoned mine tailings in the Four Corners area of the Southwest and for war-torn countries and the military, which uses depleted uranium for anti-tank weapons, tank armor and ammunition rounds. Depleted uranium is what is left over when most of the highly radioactive isotopes of uranium are removed.

"The health effects of uranium really haven't been studied since the Manhattan Project (the development of the atomic bomb in the early 1940s). But now there is more interest in the health effects of depleted uranium. People are asking questions now," Stearns said.

The questions include whether there is a connection between exposure to depleted uranium and Gulf War Syndrome or to increased cancers and birth defects in the Middle East. Stearns said it is estimated that more than 300 tons of depleted uranium were used during the first Gulf War. Military uses of depleted uranium in weapons continue today.

Closer to home, questions continue to be asked about environmental exposure to uranium from mine tailings that dot the landscape across the Navajo Nation.

"When the uranium mining boom crashed in the '80s, it really crashed and there wasn't much cleanup," Stearns said. Estimates put the number of abandoned mines on the Navajo Nation at more than 1,100.

NAU senior Hertha Woody grew up on the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, N.M. Before joining Stearns' research group, Woody said she was not very aware of heavy metal contamination of soil and water from a large uranium tailing pile near her hometown. But now she wonders about the ongoing health problems of her uncle who worked in the uranium mine at Shiprock. And she worries about others living in the area.

"My parents still live there and drink the water," she noted.

There's another Navajo word that Woody shares. It is hozho, which relates to harmony, balance and beauty. Woody explained that the yellow monster disrupts hozho and that uranium should remain in the ground to ensure balance. In fact, in the spring of 2005, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley, Jr., signed the Diné Natural Resources Protection Act, which bans uranium mining and processing on the Navajo Nation.

Woody said she has learned a great deal and not just in the realm of science. "It opens up doors and windows everywhere else," she said, noting that the work has raised her awareness about mine safety, tribal issues and reclamation efforts.

"When we first heard of the yellow monster, it was scary and not much was understood until the research began and it was passed on to the people through booklets and talks at the chapter houses," said Sheryl Martinez, a junior in NAU's nursing program and another member of Stearns' research group. Martinez, also a native of Shiprock, hopes to return to her community and put her knowledge to work after graduation.

The funding for Stearns' work is tied to improving health among Native American communities. Stearns is the NAU principal investigator of a grant jointly awarded to NAU and the Arizona Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Louise Canfield is the principal investigator on the grant for the Arizona Cancer Center. Collectively, these two grants comprise the Native American Cancer Research Partnership, a consortium of cancer researchers and educators at NAU and the Arizona Cancer Center. NACRP is one of only five such partnerships in the nation and the only one focused on Native American issues.

"The data on Native Americans for cancer evidence is very poor," Stearns said. "Navajo and Hopi may not get cancer to a greater extent, but the survival rate is lower than the general population." Stearns said the lower survival rate might be more the result of limited access to care or cultural boundaries that may prevent people from seeking care.

A goal of the partnership is to address these disparities by training Native students for cancer-related careers.

In this way, Stearns and her students can help slay the yellow monster, whether on the Navajo Nation or abroad.

POISON DUST

 URANIUM CITY, Canada

With its deserted suburban neighbourhoods and abandoned mines, Uranium City has almost fallen off the map. As the epicentre of Canada’s biggest ever uranium boom, this northwest Saskatchewan town of 180 still hangs onto an elementary school, a regional hospital and a post office. Everything else, from the town’s recreation centre to the movie theatre is either closed or demolished. Houses, if they are still standing, now sell for about a dollar — the nice ones, fixed up and running, go for about $700.

The rugged landscape that surrounds Uranium City harbours an unintended legacy: a network of radioactive waste sites scattered across sub-arctic rock and forest, some 50-odd uranium mines and refineries within a 15-kilometre radius of the town. For almost 30 years, through the height of the Cold War, Uranium City shipped atomic fuel for bombs and nuclear reactors around the world — and piles of tailings and refinery waste piled up prior to the advent of protective legislation. Consequently, "the potential for harm from exposure to uranium released from uranium mines and mills is widespread," noted one Environment Canada report in 1999.

Tooth Fairy Project Needs Help
http://www.mothersalert.org/toothfairyneedshelp.html
and
Letter exchanges from The Nation
concerning the project, radiation, and health

Below are recent exchanges of letters carried in The Nation magazine, which describes the remarkable success of the Tooth Fairy Study, and which was the subject of a BBC World news report on April 5, seen by 90 million viewers worldwide.

The Radiation and Public Health Project’s Tooth Fairy Study to date has analyzed the radioactive strontium levels (called Sr90) in 1,500 baby teeth, mainly from those born in recent years near nuclear reactors. About 50% have levels far above the expected trace levels, in some cases 30 or 40 times higher! When 10,000 baby teeth are collected, the project will then collect medical histories of each child to ascertain the degree to which children with high levels have had such childhood illnesses as asthma, learning disabilities, infections etc. Many teeth collected thus far are from children with cancers.

The findings eventually may replicate the success of the first baby teeth study started by Dr. Barry Commoner in St. Louis in 1958. After collecting 60,000 teeth, that study found that Sr90 levels rose one-hundred fold from 1948 to 1963. In that year President Kennedy asked Dr. Ernest Sternglass to testify to Congress on radiation-induced childhood cancer, to accelerate the ratification of the ban on above-ground nuclear bomb tests. Dr. Sternglass, it should be noted, is the scientific director of the current baby teeth study.

The project is  now facing an embarrassment of riches. Baby teeth are coming in from all parts of the nation and now from England, Russia, Japan and even China, because of the BBC report, as well as from mailed appeals from Alec Baldwin and Christie Brinkley as concerned parents. The Tooth fairy Project  may reach its goal of collecting 10,000 teeth within the next year or two. But the number of teeth received is growing so rapidly, funds are needed to pay for testing these teeth. The project needs individuals to sponsor the testing of one or more teeth, at the cost of $50 per tooth.

If you feel this important study merits support, please send a check for $50 (or more) as a tax-deductible contribution to the Radiation and Public Health Project , Box 60 Unionville, New York 10988 USA. Also send this appeal to others who share an interest in eliminating nuclear pollution. If you wish to forward an email message to others, email Jay M. Gould at jaymgould@aol.com, and he will send the appeal to you by e-mail. When enough small donations are made to the project it will encourage foundations to fund completion of the study.

The enclosed letter exchange in the March 26th issue of The Nation illustrates the irony that this study is being opposed by the federal government which has been measuring Sr90 levels in adult vertebrae each year since 1954 -- but inexplicably terminated these efforts in 1982. Passionate appeals by local residents as well as Alec Baldwin and Christie Brinkley moved the New Jersey Legislature to approve a grant of $75,000 to analyze baby teeth from children living near the notoriously malfunctioning Oyster Creek reactor. Governor Christie Whitman (now EPA administrator) vetoed this tiny grant from a multi-billion dollar state budget. Similar grants of $60,000 from the legislatures of Suffolk and Westchester counties have yet to materialize. It is becoming clear that the primary resource will continue to be the support of individuals and foundations who are concerned that our health is being threatened by nuclear reactor emissions, and who want us to continue to establish strong scientific evidence of radioactive exposure by measuring Sr90levels in baby teeth. NUCLEAR POWER & US

New York City

I would like to provide an update on some remarkable events that followed Joseph Mangano's epidemiological discovery that closing the Rancho Seco reactor in 1989 was followed by an enormous improvement in infant mortality and childhood cancer (Harvey Wasserman, "No Nukes--Better Health" Jan.29).

Mangano has now found that mortality rates for all age groups in these areas have, since 1989, improved for all diseases mediated by the immune response. San Francisco, for example (only 70 miles from Rancho Seco) had in 1998 the lowest age-adjusted mortality rate of any large US county, with extraordinary declines since 1990 in all cancers, including breast and prostate, and in all infectious diseases. Even AIDS death rates by 1998 have declined to the level of 1979.As a result of local grassroots dissemination of these facts and a generous grant from the CEO of a large San Francisco company, Mangano may soon be able to offer clinical as well as epidemiological proof of the benefits of closing reactors.

As national coordinator of our Tooth Fairy Project, which has been finding ominously high levels of bone-seeking radioactive strontium (Sr90) in the baby teeth of about 2000 children born in recent years that could not be the result of past superpower aboveground nuclear bomb tests, he may soon be able to ascertain the change, if any, in the ratios of Sr90 to calcium in the baby teeth of children born before and after reactor closings. The Nation readers can give us invaluable support by collecting baby teeth from anyone born in recent years, or even from baby boomers born as far back as the bomb test years of the 1950s, for we have found that they have the same incredibly high levels, after correction for the 29 year half life of Sr90, that prompted President Kennedy to terminate such aboveground tests in 1963. Please visit our website, www.radiation.org, and/or call 800 582 3716 for tooth envelopes.

JAY M. G0ULD

Oak Ridge, Tenn

Harvey Wasserman has shown again how adept he is at picking out a tidbit of bad science to support his views, while ignoring the vast storehouse of real science. He claims nuclear power is causing cancers and other health effects, based on a largely debunked study sponsored by an anti-nuclear group. Not mentioned is the National Cancer Institute study that examined 90, 000 cancer deaths near nuclear plants spanning 34 years and found no connection between the operation of reactors and cancer. This is only one of several highly reputable studies that have come to the same conclusion.

Ironically. The Nation recently published Ross Gelbspan's editorial on the seriousness of global warming. Any plan to deal effectively with this potentially devastating problem must contain significant levels of nuclear energy, which produces no greenhouse gases. Even the Clinton Administration's strategy to meet the Kyoto goals required substantial electricity production from nuclear plants. The fair-minded observer must agree that US nuclear plants have been a safe source of electricity. And as we try to find our way out of the increasingly frequent power crisis, it will probably be an important component for the foreseeable future.

DR. THEODORE M. BRESMANN

Wasserman replies
 Columbus Ohio

It's great fun when pro-nukers confirm the realities of global warming even while denying the devastating health and environmental impacts of their brand of radiation poisoning. No government or industry-funded will admit to the connection between nuclear power and cancer. But hidden in virtually all of them is damning hard evidence to the contrary. The cure for global warming lies in wind, solar and efficiency, not in an economically catastrophic technology that kills people and the planet. And kudos as always to Jay Gould and the vital work done by him and his colleagues in searching out the health impacts of this failed technology. See-no-evil doesn't cut it when radiation is being dumped into our bodies--and those of our children.

HARVEY WASSERMAN

Gould rejoinder to Besmann
(to be published)

As explained in my book The Enemy Within: The High Cost of Living Near Nuclear Reactors, reviewed by Blanche Cook in the December 7, 1996 issue of The Nation, the National Cancer Institute study that found no connection between reactor emissions and cancer, compared cancer deaths in counties with reactors with cancer deaths in adjoining counties with the bizarre assumption that reactor emissions would stop at the county border!

"European integration is built upon the foundation of respect of other cultures, tolerance and the recognition of diversity," Mr Schroeder told the seventh annual edition of the forum, whose theme is: "Honouring Identity and Celebrating common grounds."

"This includes refraining from acts that hurt honest religious sentiment. Unfortunately in the last few months this sensitivity has been lacking in many places, including Europe," he added.

"We must get back on the path of tolerance and respect of cultural and religious beliefs," said Mr Schroeder who was welcomed by the Saudi conference organisers as an "old friend."

Soldiers Face Debilitating Diseases

 POSTED: 10:40 am EST February 8, 2006

They served their time in the military in places like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and more recently, Iraq and Afghanistan. Most returned in good health.

But an NBC 30 investigation has found that for some soldiers, their service has meant a long and debilitating death sentence with mysterious diseases.

"I have good days, I have bad days," said M. Sterry, of New Haven. "There were eight of us that served together.

Six of my friends are dead."
She looks healthy, but Sterry is a very sick woman who has no idea how much longer she will live.

So Worthy To Be Praised
By lisacash, 21:04

German Nobel Prize Winner Gunter Grass accuses the Danish "Jyllands-Posten", as being a  known "RADICAL RIGHT WING  NEWS PAPER, WHICH CONSCIOUSLY PROVOKED THE MUSLIMS."

He further blames the west for their "ARROGANCE" in HIDING BEHIND FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

He goes further to say, that the ILLEGAL IRAQ INVASION OFFENDED INTERNATIONAL RIGHTS and is PART OF THE VIOLENT REACTION!

He encourages RESPECT + MUTUAL dialog!

THANK YOU MR. GRASS!!!

A VERY interesting man he is! I have read his books in english as a young wippersnapper and in the german  lanuage as an old wipper snappah!

Check it out:

KINKY
By lisacash, 10:45

Under George W. Bush, the National Security Agency has monitored international phone calls and other communications of U.S. citizens believed to have contracts with al-Qaida. The program came to light late last year.

The FISA law, passed in 1978, requires a special warrant before spying on U.S. citizens. Critics say the NSA program is illegal because it bypassed those warrants

SAD but TRUE:

Democrats.com Offers $1,000 Reward to Any Reporter Who Will Ask Follow-Up Question to Bush

100 years ago, my sister and I made protest signs and marched around the house chanting:

"WE HATE WATERGATE"

Why???

Because there was nothing else on TV or radio other than the Watergate investigative hearings and Mom + Dad were TOTALLY N2 getting all the N4!

Here is a bit of history that has revisited. You can get a synopsis of the story with some media files here:

Israel...TEAR DOWN THAT WALL!!!
By lisacash, 10:39

YES! That Israeli WALL is a WALL of SHAME!!! The second those bulldozers raised the first slab of stone. Yes, I watched this, wept and wrote letters against this.

Israeli Wall

It is standing proof, that the Israeli and western governments have learned nothing from the past, nor do they wish to advance into a peaceful future.

This too is a DOUBLE STANDARD that the Middle Eastern world has a RIGHT to address.

Berlin Wall

I have watched Israel destroy the Palestinian airport, which allowed goods + services, along with Diplomats to land, seeking to assist them in negotiating peace. This happened shortly after Clinton landed there and honoured the Palestinian people. Then I watched the Clinton administration turn their backs once more on the Palestinian people. BITTER!

Bill Clinton + Yassir Arafat

I have distressfully watched Israel cage Yassir Arafat, not allowing him, the only one who could have led,  to lead. To see diplomats having to meet him in the ruins of his headquarters was a
MOCKERY OF DEMOCRACY!.

I have met too many journalist, authors, and everyday people in Belgium, Poland, Austria, America, Germany, Czechoslovakia + Holland, that were victims of the Holocaust. I have seen the tattoos with my own eyes. I have touched them with my own hands. I have held victims in my arms while they wept and remembered. I have walked through the graveyards and touched the stones of the dead. I have held the pictures of their lost loved ones between my fingers time and time again. I have comforted many women that were raped by the soldiers that freed them. Why we waited soooo long to rescue the world from Hitler, will always be a question in my mind. I do believe I know the answer.

Although I do not, can not + will not accept any type of murder from either side of the conflict, it is, and always will be, my wish to see a PEACEFUL and FREE Middle East.
